One of the tremendous benefits of traveling, either in person or vicariously, is the opportunity to connect with other people emotionally. We experience both the uniqueness of other cultures and our common goals and dreams.

As Global Travelers, we also try to travel responsibly — respecting local cultures and the environment and “giving back.” At a recent club meeting, we heard an inspiring presentation by a leader in the Ecuadorian organization Fondacion Amazonia Productiva. Maria Paula Erazo described her organization’s commitment to fostering Responsible Tourism, which they describe with three pillars:

Responsible tourism

Equity

Ensuring that the people who live in our destination benefit directly from tourists.

Respect

Experiencing local culture and identity not as a tourist attraction but as a living heritage.

Responsibility

Recognizing environmental impact and taking active steps to regenerate nature.

Attendees were impressed by both Maria’s passion and by the vision of her organization. They are committed to  responsible, sustainable tourism and to economic development in native communities.
