At Global Travelers, we love to travel! We see new places, meet new people, and gain new perspectives. But travel can also come with frustrations, and money is often one of them what with confusing exchange rates, unexpected fees, and wondering if you’re getting a fair deal.
Enter the Wise card. Wise isn’t a traditional credit card. It’s a debit card linked to a multi-currency account and designed specifically for international travel.
What is the Wise card?
The Wise card is a debit card that lets you hold money in multiple currencies at the same time. You add money from your home bank account, convert it into other currencies if and when you choose, and then spend in the local currency directly from those balances without paying extra fees.
It works anywhere Visa is accepted, which covers most hotels, restaurants, shops, and transport providers worldwide.
Why Wise works well for international travel
- No hidden fees. Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate, the same rate you see on Google or in most currency converters. Many traditional cards add a markup to that rate, even when they advertise no foreign transaction fee. You’ll know the conversion fee up front in the Wise app. There’s no mystery and no post-trip surprises.
- Multiple currencies, one card. This is especially useful on trips that cross borders or involve transit stops in different countries. You can also use it to withdraw cash from ATMs if needed.
- Easy tracking and budgeting. The Wise app shows spending in both local currency and USD, which makes budgeting easier.
Of course, you’ll always want to have a backup card along just in case anything goes wrong with your Wise card.
A Global Travelers Example
Picture a group of Global Travelers flying from the US to a 10-day trip in Romania and Bulgaria, with a few days’ stop in Germany on the way.
Before you leave, you estimate how much you need for your trip. You can convert currency before you leave if, for example, you want to be sure you’ll have enough euros for Germany or you notice a particularly good exchange rate for Bulgarian lev. Or you can leave everything in US dollars (or other currency) and let Wise convert it automatically on the day you use the card.
Either way, Wise uses the same exchange rate and charges the same transparent fee, so you don’t pay extra for letting it handle the conversion for you.
Germany: During your stopover, you can use your Wise card to pay in Euros for hotels, meals, and local transport.
Romania and Bulgaria: The main tour is prepaid, but Wise will be handy for extra meals, optional excursions, souvenirs and other purchases.
Instead of trying to find paying overly high rates at the airport, wandering around to find exchange agencies, or carrying large amounts of cash, you can use one card across all three countries, with clear visibility into what you’re spending.
If your balance gets low during the trip, you can top it up from your linked bank account using the Wise app or from the Wise website. Debit card top-ups are instant; ACH bank transfers take 1-2 days.
A key drawback to note:
Wise does not offer rewards, miles, or cashback. For travelers who value points, this matters. In that case, use your travel credit card for major purchases and Wise for daily expenses while on the road.
How to apply (US Travelers)
Applying is fully online:

There is a small, one-time card fee, with pay-as-you-go usage costs that are clearly disclosed.

Bon voyage!
