by the Travel Tips Club Interest Group
This month's Travel Tips Club Interest Group meeting featured an informative discussion on travel insurance, led by member Mike Philson, a travel agent, who shared practical advice on selecting the right coverage for domestic and international travel.
One of the key takeaways was that purchasing insurance through an independent provider often offers better value than buying coverage directly from a cruise line. Companies such as Travel Insured, Allianz, and Travel Guard were discussed as popular options, with coverage and pricing varying by traveler and trip.
Timing is also important. Members learned that purchasing travel insurance within the first two weeks after making a non-refundable trip deposit may allow coverage for pre-existing medical conditions. Mike also emphasized contacting the insurance company immediately in the event of a medical emergency so they can coordinate care, transportation, or evacuation if needed.
Colette Coty shared her experience purchasing insurance for an Antarctica expedition, where proof of at least $200,000 in medical evacuation coverage was required because of the destination's remote location. She also introduced the group to IAMAT (International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers), a nonprofit organization that helps travelers locate English-speaking physicians around the world. She will report back with more information at a future meeting. Another medical reference is ATHNA (American Travel Health Nurses Association).
We also explored travel benefits offered by premium credit cards, particularly the Chase Sapphire card. In addition to trip protection, access to airport lounges and travel credits that may help offset the annual fee for frequent travelers.
The best travel insurance depends on your destination, health needs, and budget.
