After years of traveling around the world, members of the Rotary Global Travelers club have picked up a few habits that make trips smoother, safer, and far more enjoyable.

The following tips can make a real difference when you’re navigating unfamiliar places. juggling logistics, and trying to enjoy the journey.

Here’s what members of our club’s Travel Tips and Aspirations interest group recommend.

Before You Go: Set Yourself Up Well

A good trip often starts long before you leave home.

  • Use a simple pre-travel checklist so nothing important gets missed
  • Check visa and entry requirements early, not the week before departure
  • Notify your credit card company that you’ll be traveling
  • Keep digital and physical copies of key documents, passport, credit and insurance cards, and medical information with you
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary and emergency contacts with someone at home

If you’re a U.S. traveler, you can also register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updates and support while abroad.

Pack Light, Pack Smart

If there’s one truth about traveling everyone can agree on, it’s this: You’ll never regret packing lighter.

  • Choose a European-size carry-on when possible, it’s easier on trains, stairs, and cobblestones
  • Pack only what you can comfortably carry for several blocks
  • Think layers, not outfits, especially for trips with mixed climates
  • Quick-dry fabrics and lightweight materials make it easier to do laundry on the road
  • Convertible clothing can save space and reduce decisions

Suitcase getting full? Think about what you can pick up at a local thrift or discount store when you arrive, and leave behind when you return home

Luggage and Gear: Keep It Simple and Secure

As frequent travellers, we know how important it is to plan ahead to keep our belongings safe.

·       Use a reliable carry-on and avoid overpacking

  • Add a luggage tracking device like an AirTag for peace of mind
  • Consider anti-theft bags with reinforced straps or cut-resistant materials
  • Keep valuables distributed across different locations, not all in one bag
  • Use a Chapstick container to hide cash
  • Carry a credit card and cash in a neck or waist pouch with a reinforced strap and RFID protection.
  • Wear clothing with hidden pockets, like those from ScottEVest.
  • Use ApplePay or Google Wallet if your credit card is stolen or compromised.

The goal isn’t to be overly cautious. It’s to plan thoughtfully to avoid a future problem.

Staying Safe Without Overthinking It

Having traveled to many countries—large or small, developed or developing—we Global Travelers know that travel safety is less about fear and more about awareness.

  • Pay attention to your surroundings, even in familiar places
  • Trust your instincts, especially in enclosed or unfamiliar situations
  • Step aside if you need to check directions, rather than stopping in the middle of a busy area.
  • Consult the map on your phone or check a paper map by putting it inside a book so it’s not obvious you’re lost
  • Take photos of rental cars and parking locations so you can find your way back

If you’re traveling with others, consider sharing your live GPS location on your phone to make coordination much easier.

On the Ground: Make Life Easier

A few small habits can smooth out the day-to-day details.

  • Keep your itinerary accessible, whether in an app or a simple document
  • Take a moment to orient yourself when you arrive somewhere new
  • And one of the simplest but most helpful tips, always know how to get back to where you’re staying. Pin your hotel location on your phone map, and carry  hotel card so you can show your destination to a driver if needed

Tools and Apps Worth Using

You don’t need dozens of apps. Just a few good ones.

Planning and Organisation

  • TripIt, keeps all your bookings in one place
  • TravelZoo, highlights travel deals and opportunities

Getting Around

  • CityMapper, excellent for navigating public transport
  • Use local transportation apps like Grab in Southeast Asia, Bolt or FreeNow in Europe/Africa, and Ola in India. They’re often more accurate than global ones

Experiences and Activities

Outdoors

  • AllTrails, helpful for finding and navigating hikes

Your Favorite Travel Brands

  • Choose just a few airlines and hotels for your travels. Make reservations directly through their apps. Points will pile up, and you’ll accrue free nights and upgrades.

Not a fan of digital apps? A simple alternative that still works well is a document or spreadsheet containing all your travel details. Provide a copy to family members and take one with you. Low-tech, but very effective.

Travel with Purpose

One of the things that sets Rotary Global Travelers apart is the desire to connect, not merely pass through.

Look for opportunities to engage with local communities, whether through a walking tour, a shared meal, or a service project. Some platforms even connect travellers with local needs, offering a chance to contribute meaningfully.

Travel becomes richer when it’s not just about what you see, but who you meet.
