On two cloudy, sometimes drippy, but basically pleasant days in September, three dozen Global Travelers came together for our second annual Habitat for Humanity build in Alexandria, Minnesota. When we started, the exterior and some of the interior of the house was framed. After our two days of work, most of the roof was on, most of the interior framing was done, and most of the insulation was installed. Plus, we had fun!

We had the opportunity to meet the young single mom who will live in this home with her three children. She is very excited and grateful to have the opportunity to purchase an affordable home where her family will have a safe, stable environment. Douglas County Habitat and Leah shared her story and challenges with us.
Next door is the house that we helped to build last fall. It’s now painted, decorated, and landscaped. A warm, welcoming home for Jade and her children. She stopped by at lunch on our first day to greet us and thank us.

Our Global Travelers in the Alexandria community greeted us with open arms and tremendous hospitality. They were able to house all the visitors, sparing us the expense of hotel rooms and giving us a wonderful opportunity to socialize. A big thank you to Melanie & Mike, Amy & Rodney, Corrine & Mark, Barb, and Catherine. Members of the service committee of Barb Brown’s church provided lunch on Wednesday. Barb obtained a grant from Thrivent to pay for dinner Wednesday night (hosted by Melanie & Mike DeLuca at their spacious lake home) and lunch on Thursday. Most of us enjoyed dinner together on Thursday evening (interesting pizzas) at a local winery. We’ll definitely do this again next year.
Our club typically makes a donation to the organization that we partner with for a service project. For this project, our Rotary E-Club of Global Travelers donated $500 to the Douglas County Habitat organization. In addition, individual club members donated another $800. We’re proud to contribute $1,300 to the mission of providing affordable home ownership in or near Alexandria.
