Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or an extended international adventure, packing efficiently can save time, money, and unnecessary stress. At a recent Travel Tips Club Interest Group meeting, we shared practical strategies for making the most of your luggage while traveling comfortably.

Why Travel with a Carry-On?

Packing everything into a carry-on offers several advantages. It helps avoid checked baggage fees, which have become a significant source of airline revenue.

Carry-on travel also reduces the risk of lost or damaged luggage, speeds your exit through customs, and ensures you have access to your belongings if flights are delayed, canceled, or connections are missed.

Maximize Your Packing Space

Here are a few simple techniques to dramatically increase the amount that can fit into a carry-on:

  • Fold and then roll clothing tightly to maximize space.
  • Wear your bulkiest items—such as jeans, jackets, or raincoats—on the flights.
  • If traveling with a companion, divide clothing between bags so each person has essentials if one bag is delayed or lost.

One impressive example shared during the meeting highlighted just how much can fit into a standard carry-on. Becky Kaurup successfully packed 17 tops, two pairs of dress pants, two pairs of jeans, two pairs of shorts, dress shoes, water shoes, undergarments, and pajamas—all in a single carry-on bag!

Choose Travel-Friendly Clothing

Selecting versatile clothing makes packing even easier. Consider quick-drying synthetic fabrics that can be hand-washed and dried overnight. Washing sheets are a lightweight alternative to liquid detergent and are ideal for travel. Convertible pants that zip off into shorts provide flexibility and reduce packing bulk. Another helpful guideline is the “3-3-3 Rule”: pack three tops, three bottoms, and three pairs of shoes that all coordinate with one another. This approach creates numerous outfit combinations while keeping luggage light.  No rule covers purses – haha!

Helpful Travel Gear

Several travel products were recommended during the discussion:

  • TravelPro carry-on luggage for its traveler-friendly sizing and durability.
  • SCOTTeVEST features more than 30 pockets to conveniently carry electronics, passports, phones, e-readers, and other essentials.
  • Sawyer Permethrin Spray for treating clothing to help protect against mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers for up to six months.
  • Packing cubes, or compression cubes, to keep clothing organized and maximize available space.

With thoughtful clothing choices, efficient packing techniques, and a few well-designed travel accessories, you can simplify your journey and avoid extra baggage fees. If you’re interested in learning more about packing for travel, check out these posts:
