Recently, Bill Gates announced he would give away virtually all his wealth in the next 20 years and close the Gates Foundation, one of Rotary’s partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
The Gates Foundation, which has already donated more than $100 billion in its first 25 years, needs to spend more than twice that amount before closing its doors in 2045. The good news is that polio remains a priority. At the recent RI Convention in Calgary, Rotary and the Gates Foundation announced a joint commitment to allocate up to $450 million over the next three years to support polio eradication. Rotary will continue to raise $50 million annually, with every dollar matched by two additional dollars from the Gates Foundation.
